Well typically whoever is listening is getting probably 200-500 other songs if its a major label pitch and the competition is fierce. Sometimes a label will have a pitch meeting with some of the other pluggers and one song is pitched one after the other and responded to as a “pass” or a “hold”. Songwriters sometimes get upset if there song is passed on, and why there wasn’t any feedback to why it was passed. And yes it can be frustrating! But in the grand scope of things, if every A&R stopped to explain why the song was passed they would never get through hundreds of songs, and honestly we have to respect their time and the opportunity we have to even present a song before a major label artist.
Many songs are pitched that get passed but I believe that a great song is a great song period, and will eventually find a home and land somewhere. Thankfully, in Nashville the song is King, and I hope that never changes regardless of any political backroom deals that can happen, and as frustrating as it can be to get a song cut. Writing a great song will always improve the writers craft, their expression, gifting and exposing it to the right people can lend amazing opportunities when hope continues onward.
