I like to look at this question similar to what Scott Parker from hearts bluff music has coined for years in these three parts:
body:
the structure of the song or the mechanics like rhyme scheme- double AA B AA C AA, the melody, the hook, and the chord structure that allows the melody to come alive.
soul:
the emotion of the song, what feeling does it convey to the listener, are you moved to cry, smile, or become overjoyed with laughter?
spirit:
is there an element within the song moves you to the greater good in yourself or humanity? Makes you believe you can be a better person, God spoke to your heart, you were convicted of a wrong decision and thought to change it by hearing truth?
These three elements are in my mind the “holy trinity” of a great song. Not every song has them all but when they all three come together there is power to convey a message, story, or insight beyond comprehension!
